FULL REVIEW ON THE BIKE CAVE

Motor Goat SL

I own a Motor Goat, and after 50-plus bikes it's still one of the most comfortable things I've thrown a leg over. The SL is that exact bike — same frame, fork, coil shock and 4-piston hydraulic brakes — locked to street-legal Class 2 / Class 3 limits on a UL 2271 certified 52V Samsung pack. Same quality. No grey area about where you can ride it.

Ride it like a bike

“For me though, I like to go on bike paths once in a while, and being able to show people you're on a bicycle is worth it to me.” The Shimano 7-speed drivetrain unlocks Class 3 pedal assist to 25 mph and gets you home under your own power if the battery ever runs flat. It's a cadence sensor — spin the cranks and the power comes on.

Delete the drivetrain

“Let's face it, a bike like this is just not designed to be pedalled around all that much, so if you want to just delete the drivetrain altogether, you can do that — just go with pegs.” Cleanest, most stripped-back moped look. Same frame, same road-legal power, no chain to fuss with.

Heads up: the video is my full review of the full-power Motor Goat. The SL is the same bike — same frame, suspension, brakes, cockpit and seat — with the motor and controller locked to street-legal limits. Everything below about how it looks, feels and rides is straight from that day. The speed and power numbers on this page are the SL's, not the V3's.

What I Found On The Goat

Motor Goat seat and side profile
Comfort Hours in the saddle

“The seat is thick, it's plush, and it's perfectly shaped in the back to just cradle the back of your bum — you and the bike just become one. I love sitting on this bike. I could sit on this bike for hours.”

Motor Goat FASTACE rear coil shock
Suspension 100–120 mm travel

“Triple-clamp fork up front, and out back this massive FASTACE coil shock — compression settings as well as rebound. It's got no springy feel, no clunk back to the top position. It's smooth, and it just takes the chatter away from the road.”

Motor Goat 4-piston hydraulic brake caliper and 203mm rotor
Brakes 203 mm rotors, F&R

“Four-piston hydraulic disc brakes biting onto big thick 203 mil rotors front and back. I set my marker at 20 feet and slammed on the brakes — I still had another two bike lengths to the first marker. That's insane.

Braking test filmed on the full-power Goat from 30 mph. The SL runs the identical brake package at lower legal speeds.

Ben riding the Motor Goat, showing riding position
Ergonomics 33" seat height

“The big wide and tall handlebars are perfect for controlling a bike like this, and you get a nice short stem that brings the bars in for a really nice upright position. The wheelbase is quite long and that's a good thing — it keeps it super steady. But be blunt: this is a tall bike. Under 5'6", look at something lower.”

Motor Goat fat tire tread close-up
Off-Road 20×4 street-tuned

“These aren't the best off-road tires. They've got some cuts in the treads but they're not going to dig into the mud, they're not going to dig into the dirt. They are nice and wide so they don't sink in all that much — but if you're buying this to ride dirt, budget for a more aggressive set.”

Motor Goat full side profile by the river
Build Quality 50+ bikes ridden

“This bike feels refined. It feels like a quality bike — everything is tight, everything fits, there's no features on there that shouldn't be on here. The attention to detail, the choice of components and the ride quality are all really nice, and I can now see why this bike is so damn popular.”

The Cockpit

Everything On One Screen

LCD Display + BIKEGO App (throttle ignition key required)

“The first thing you want to do to get power on the bike is turn the ignition — without this key there's no way to get any power anywhere on the bike.” From there the centre-mounted colour display carries battery percentage and voltage, speed in mph or km/h, live motor wattage, odometer, trip, average speed and your pedal-assist level.

“On the left here is everything you're going to need to operate anything electronic on the bike” — power, PAS up/down, horn, left and right turn signals, a hazard switch for when you park it somewhere visible, and high/low beam. The screen also drops into a dimmer night mode automatically and goes extra bright in the sun.

Total length 72.5", width 28.5", height 47". The long wheelbase is deliberate — it's what keeps the bike steady at speed.

The Bike Cave Verdict

Ben's Take

I own a Motor Goat, so I'm not guessing here. I've had this frame on gravel dykes, in the sand, through wet leaves and out at night, and the thing I keep coming back to is how refined it feels. Everything is tight, everything fits, there's nothing on it that shouldn't be there. The seat is thick and plush and shaped so you and the bike become one — I could sit on this bike for hours. The suspension is genuinely good: no springy feel, no clunk, it just takes the chatter out of the road. And the four-piston hydraulics on 203 mil rotors are the best I've tested on anything this heavy.

The SL is that exact bike with the power locked to legal limits — 20 mph on the throttle as a Class 2, 25 mph on pedal assist as a Class 3 — and a UL 2271 certified 52V Samsung pack, which is the certification a lot of cities and buildings now want to see. You are giving up the full-send top speed of the V3, and you should know that going in. What you get back is a bike you can ride on the bike path, park in your building, and never once think about whether you're allowed to be there. Two things haven't changed either: it's a tall bike, so under 5'6" look elsewhere, and it's heavy enough that a regular bike rack won't cut it — you'll want a truck bed or a seriously beefy rack. At $1,999, for the amount of bike you get, I don't know how they do it.

👍 What I loved

  • The seat — thick, plush, shaped to cradle you. All-day comfortable
  • Suspension with real adjustment: compression and rebound out back
  • 4-piston hydraulics on 203 mm rotors — the stopping power is mind-blowing
  • Feels refined and properly built — everything tight, everything fits
  • Fully street-legal Class 2 + Class 3, UL 2271 certified battery
  • Lights are excellent at night, plus turn signals, hazards and a horn

👎 What to know

  • Locked to 20/25 mph — no full-send top speed here
  • It's a tall bike — under 5'6" you'll want something lower
  • Stock tires are street-tuned; they don't dig into mud, dirt or sand
  • Grips are hard plastic and the throttle grip is firm (durable, but firm)
  • Heavy moped-style build — plan on a truck bed or a very beefy rack
