Segway Xaber 300
A 72-volt, 21kW mid-drive e-dirt bike built off Segway's own Dakar rally prototype. Off-road only, dealer-assembled, four ride modes. Ben got 44 mph out of the lowest one and 52 out of the second, with 300 and Beast still locked for break-in.

Mid-Drive, Four Ride Modes
8,000W nominal, 21,000W peak, through a 520 chain.
72V 44Ah, Samsung 50S Cells
3.17 kWh, rated for a 5C peak discharge, so Segway says power delivery stays consistent under hard, sustained use. Ben's unit still showed 73% left partway through a mountain trail ride that included two top-speed runs and a hill climb.
150 / 200 / 300 / Beast
Four power modes, modelled on gas dirt bike displacement. Segway locks 300 and Beast until the bike has logged 60 miles in the first two modes. Ben's review unit never unlocked them — his 44 mph and 52 mph readings are both from 150 and 200 mode, on dirt, off his display.
Pro Mode, From the App
A fifth, customisable mode lets you shape the power curve and acceleration from Segway's app, on top of the four fixed presets.

Marzocchi, Front and Rear
220mm of travel at both ends, fully adjustable.
Inverted Fork, 220mm Travel
Compression and rebound adjustment up front, matched to a Marzocchi coil shock out back with 85mm of stroke that works out to 220mm at the wheel — plus preload.
"Just So Soft and Buttery"
Ben's words, from the ride: "200 millimeters plus travel under you, just buttery smooth, just eating up all the bumps." He said the same thing again on the mountain trails: "this bike just goes over everything so smoothly."
1,621 Nm/deg Torsional Rigidity
Segway's own figure for the aerospace-aluminium frame, which it says is developed off its Dakar rally prototype. That's the number Segway credits for keeping the bike stable and predictable at speed.

Motorcycle Brakes and Traction
4-piston hydraulic, plus a full traction control stack.
4-Piston Hydraulic, Both Ends
220mm x 3mm rotors front and rear. Ben's reaction from the acceleration test, at 150 mode: "the brakes on this thing are insane."
Reversed, Motorcycle-Style
The rear brake is the left lever, opposite of a mountain bike. Ben catches himself on it more than once in the review: "my brakes are reverse on this — this is motorcycle style, dirt bike style, not mountain bike, so my rear brake is the left. Always, always forget that."
TCS, Hill Start, Motion Alert
Selectable traction control, a hill-start hold, a one-button reverse for tight spots, and a motion alert if the bike is moved while parked.
*Ben's own GPS/display readings, on dirt. 300 and Beast never unlocked on his review unit.
Security & Ride Modes
Three Ways to Unlock — Four Ride Modes, Two of Them Earned
NFC, password or mechanical key (your choice)
Segway gives you three separate ways to unlock the Xaber 300: an NFC tap, a password, or a plain mechanical key. Traction control is selectable for the terrain, there's a hill-start hold so it doesn't roll back under you, and a motion alert if someone moves the bike while it's parked.
The ride modes are named after gas dirt bike displacement — 150, 200, 300 and Beast — and Segway locks the top two until the bike has 60 miles logged in the first two. It's a break-in requirement, not a subscription: Ben's unit arrived with 300 and Beast locked for exactly that reason, which is why every speed number on this page from his own testing tops out in 200 mode.
Plan Your Ride
Your Range, Not Mine
No cranks on this one, so the numbers that matter are your weight, how hard you ride and what the ground looks like. Segway's own claimed range runs from 50km in Beast mode to 120km at a steady 50km/h — set your own inputs below.

Seat height and drive-chain size are on the spec sheet Ben read from and mentioned in the review, but aren't independently confirmed here, so they're left off this table rather than guessed at. Everything above is Segway's own published figure unless marked as Ben's measurement.
The Bike Cave Verdict
Ben's Take
Honestly, I don't know what madman would need 300 mode, or even worse, Beast mode, in a place like this — it's just too loose. Maybe on a track, but I'm not on a dirt bike track, I'm on the back roads where other riders might be coming the other way, and there's no safe place for me to test the true top speed of this thing. So I'm going to leave that up to Segway's spec sheet. But the more I get on this bike and the more I ride it, the more I feel like I've got a hold of it — like I'm one with the bike. I'm getting used to the brakes, I'm getting used to the power band, and it's so controlled. The suspension is just insane. Huge thank you to Segway for sending the Xaber 300 over — this thing is a blast, and it's staying in the Bike Cave for a long, long time.
No Cave Score on this one yet — Ben didn't put a number on the Xaber 300 on camera, and we don't guess at one. This page gets a score the day he does.
👍 What I loved
- Arrived fully built and torqued to spec, with witness marks on every bolt so you can see if one's worked loose
- "Never been on a bike like this" — attention to detail and QC he calls second to none
- 44 mph in the lowest power mode, 52 in the second, with two more modes still locked
- "The brakes on this thing are insane," and the suspension "just buttery smooth, just eating up all the bumps"
- 73% battery left partway through a mountain ride that included two top-speed runs and a hill climb
- TCS, hill-start hold, one-button reverse and a motion alert as standard
👎 What to know
- Off-road only — no turn signals, no road-legal title, and Segway is explicit about it
- 300 and Beast modes ship locked until you've logged 60 miles in 150 and 200
- Brakes are reversed from a mountain bike, motorcycle-style — rear is the left lever, and it's easy to forget
- About 187 lb with the battery in — a big bike to manhandle if you lay it down
- Dealer-only: no direct online checkout, no Bike Cave discount code
Frequently asked questions
Is the Segway Xaber 300 street legal?
No. Segway is explicit that it's off-road use only: no turn signals, no road-legal equipment. It comes with a VIN and a title, but it's an off-road title, not a street one.
How fast is the Segway Xaber 300?
Segway rates it at 96 km/h (60 mph) in Beast mode. Ben's review unit shipped with 300 and Beast modes locked until 60 miles are logged in the 150 and 200 modes — Segway's own break-in requirement — so he never had them unlocked. On dirt, reading his display, he measured 44 mph in 150 mode and 52 mph in 200 mode. He didn't have a safe enough stretch of trail to chase the claimed 60 mph top end himself, so that number is Segway's, not a measured one.
Where do you buy a Segway Xaber 300, and what does it cost?
The Xaber 300 is dealer-only, like a motorcycle. Segway doesn't publish a fixed checkout price on its own site — the MSRP disclaimer on their page says dealers set their own retail price — and The Bike Cave doesn't have an affiliate link or a discount code for this bike. Check Segway's product page for current dealer availability near you.
Are the brakes different from a mountain bike?
Yes. The Xaber 300 uses motorcycle-style controls: the rear brake is the left lever, the opposite of a mountain bike or most e-bikes. Ben mentions catching himself on this more than once during the review.
Does The Bike Cave have a discount code for the Xaber 300?
No. Segway didn't provide an affiliate link or a discount code for this bike, so there's no promo on this page. If that changes, we'll add it.
