Frequently asked questions
How do manufacturers measure the range they advertise?
In the friendliest conditions they can find: lowest assist level, light rider, flat ground, mild weather, no wind, full tire pressure and a brand-new battery. Nothing about that is dishonest, but nothing about it is your commute either. Treat a claimed range as the ceiling and work down from there.
What actually kills range?
Speed first — air resistance climbs steeply, so 28 mph costs far more per mile than 18. Then throttle use instead of pedalling, total weight, hills, stop-and-go riding, cold weather, and soft or under-inflated tires. Cold is the sneaky one: a battery can lose a noticeable chunk of its usable capacity near freezing and get it back when it warms up.
How many watt-hours do you need?
Watt-hours are the honest number, because miles depend on how you ride. As a planning rule, an efficient pedal-assist commuter uses roughly 10 to 15 Wh per mile, and a heavy fat-tire bike ridden on the throttle can use 25 to 35 Wh per mile. Multiply your realistic mileage by the higher figure and buy a pack that covers it.
Is a dual-battery bike worth the money?
If you genuinely ride long, yes — it's the only upgrade that reliably buys distance, and two packs also let you charge one while riding the other. If you ride 12 miles a day, you're paying to carry weight you'll never use. Be honest about your longest normal ride, not your best imaginary one.
Does a bigger battery take longer to charge?
Yes, in proportion. A standard e-bike charger delivers a fixed number of amps, so doubling the capacity roughly doubles the time — big dual packs can be an overnight job. Some brands sell a faster charger or a second charger for dual-battery bikes, which is worth budgeting for if you turn the bike around daily.
How do you keep a big battery healthy?
Don't store it full or empty — somewhere around half charge is kindest for long storage. Keep it out of freezing garages and hot cars, let it warm up before charging after a cold ride, and use the charger it came with. Batteries lose capacity with age no matter what you do; these habits just slow it down.
